Outlast is a survival horror video game released in 2013, created and published by Red Barrels. The storyline follows Miles Upshur, a freelance investigative journalist, as he explores the secluded psychiatric facility called Mount Massive Asylum. Situated in the remote mountains of Lake County, Colorado, the game unfolds as Miles delves into the disturbing mysteries within the asylum.
The downloadable content, Outlast: Whistleblower, shifts the focus to Waylon Park, the individual responsible for leading Miles to the asylum initially.
Outlast made its debut on Microsoft Windows on September 4, 2013, followed by releases on PlayStation 4 on February 4, 2014, and Xbox One on June 19, 2014. Subsequently, versions for Linux and OS X became available on March 31, 2015. In February 2018, a Nintendo Switch version named Outlast: Bundle of Terror was introduced.
Outlast garnered predominantly positive reviews, earning acclaim for its immersive atmosphere, horror elements, and gameplay. By October 2016, the game had achieved sales of 4 million copies. By May 2018, the entire series had reached a total of 15 million copies sold.
Following this success, a sequel, Outlast 2, was launched on April 25, 2017, and a prequel, The Outlast Trials, was introduced on May 18, 2023. Additionally, The Murkoff Account, a comic book series bridging the narrative gap between Outlast and Outlast 2, was published from July 2016 to November 2017.
Outlast Gameplay
In Outlast, players take on the role of investigative journalist Miles Upshur, who explores a deteriorating psychiatric hospital in Leadville, Colorado, overrun by homicidal patients. The game is presented from a first-person perspective and incorporates stealth gameplay mechanics. Players can perform actions such as walking, running, crouching, jumping, climbing ladders, and vaulting over objects.
Notably, there is no visible health bar, and the player cannot attack enemies. Survival relies on strategic stealth tactics, including hiding in lockers, sneaking past adversaries, utilizing shadows, and seeking refuge behind or under objects. Alternatively, players may opt to outrun their pursuers. In the event of the player’s demise, the game resets to the most recent checkpoint.
The majority of the hospital is shrouded in darkness, and players can only navigate through the dimness using a camcorder equipped with night vision. However, relying on night vision slowly depletes the limited supply of batteries, necessitating players to search for additional batteries scattered throughout the asylum.
Outlast employs frequent jump scares and audio cues to alert players when an enemy has detected them. Recording specific events with the camcorder prompts Miles to jot down notes, offering deeper insights into his thoughts.
Additionally, players can gather documents that provide background information and exposition about the facility, including excerpts from patient diaries and reports from the hospital staff.
The developers at Red Barrels cited the survival-centric gameplay of Amnesia: The Dark Descent as a significant influence on the combat-free narrative approach adopted in Outlast. Additionally, the found-footage horror films Quarantine and REC played a role in shaping the game’s direction.
