In 2012, United Front Games developed the action-adventure video game “Sleeping Dogs,” which Square Enix published. The game, available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows, is set in contemporary Hong Kong, following the story of Wei Shen, a martial artist and undercover police officer who infiltrates the Sun On Yee Triad organization. The gameplay revolves around Wei Shen’s martial arts prowess, combat skills, shooting abilities, parkour, and the use of various gadgets for both combat and exploration.
Players progress through the game by completing missions to unlock content and advance the narrative. Alternatively, they can freely explore the open-world environment, engaging in legal and criminal activities. Criminal actions may trigger a police response, with the intensity controlled by a “heat” system. Accomplishing activities such as fighting, driving, and racing rewards Shen with statistical benefits and earns players achievements.
Development of Sleeping Dogs commenced in 2008, with the game initially announced in 2009 as part of the True Crime series. However, Activision Blizzard canceled it in 2011 due to project delays and budgetary issues. Square Enix later acquired the publishing rights, rebranded the game as Sleeping Dogs (sans the True Crime license), and deemed it a spiritual successor. During development, the United Front team conducted field research in Hong Kong for visual and sound environments, while Square Enix London Studios collaborated with United Front on the project.
Upon its 2012 release, Sleeping Dogs garnered positive reviews for its combat mechanics, voice acting, protagonist, experience system, and city depiction. However, criticisms were directed at its camera and certain animations. Within a year, the game sold over 1.5 million copies. Over the following six months, downloadable content, including new outfits, missions, add-ons, and three expansion packs, was released. A remastered version, the Definitive Edition, arrived in October 2014 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, featuring improved gameplay, setting, and audio-visual quality based on community feedback. Feral Interactive released the macOS version of the Definitive Edition on March 31, 2016.
The success of Sleeping Dogs led to the creation of a spin-off multiplayer game, Triad Wars, which was, unfortunately, canceled in 2015. In 2017, a live-action film adaptation was announced, with Donnie Yen slated to star as Wei Shen.
