Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Lost Album’ is ready for release after 34 years

Pakistan’s legendary qawwal and singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s new album ‘Gamishda’ and these Sunny recordings will be released on September 20, 2024 after 34 years.

This missing album called ‘Chain of Light’ has been discovered in the ‘tape archives’ of Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. The release of this album is supported in part by the British Council.

According to Real World Records, the album was recorded in April 1990 at Real World Studios with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s full team and contains four qawwalis, one of which has never been heard.

According to the details released by the record label, these recordings of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan were hidden in the archive of Real World Studios, which were discovered when the record label was shifting its archive in 2021.

Real World Records is the label that signed Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1989 and released a series of albums with him worldwide in the 1990s.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s association with Peter Gabriel and Real World Records began after her performance at the 1985 ‘Womed Festival’, the first time Nusrat performed in front of a majority Western audience.

It was after this historic festival that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was signed by the Real World Record label, further enhancing her international profile.  His voice spread so much in the West that people said that it was the first time their ears had heard such a voice.

Meeting Peter Gabriel became the turning point of Nusrat’s career. Gabriel allowed Nusrat to showcase her talent in the film ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’, and she did justice to her work, which skyrocketed her fame. Nusrat’s rendition of Raag Darbari for a special scene in the film was exactly as per the director’s demand, otherwise many singers had failed to reach his desired standard.
