Hasina Wajid’s request for political asylum to the British government

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid, who left the country in a military helicopter after her resignation, has applied for a British visa.

Arab News reported concerning the British newspaper “The Independent” that Hasina Wajid had reached the neighboring country of India on Monday before the protesters entered her official residence.

Sheikh Hasina Wajid ruled Bangladesh for the past 15 years and was active in the country’s politics for more than 20 years.

Protests broke out in Bangladesh last month against the quota system in government jobs, during which more than 400 people were killed by security forces.

Hasina Wajid reached New Delhi along with her sister and then sent an asylum request to the British government.

Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s sister-in-law Sheikh Rehana holds British citizenship and is the mother of British Labor MP Tulip Siddiq.

Sources say that the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Hasina Wajid, is still waiting for the response of the British government.

On the other hand, British Foreign Minister David Lemmy has called for an investigation by the United Nations into the violent protests in Bangladesh and described these events as “tragic”.

In a statement, he said that “all parties must work together to end the violence, restore law and order and prevent further loss of human life.”

The British Foreign Minister said that the people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent investigation under the supervision of the United Nations into the events of the past few months.

The British and Indian governments have not yet issued an official statement on the protests in Bangladesh and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid.

On Monday, the spokesperson of the White House said in a statement that the United States has demanded respect for democratic rights in Bangladesh.

We want the formation of the interim government to be democratic and have representation of all parties. We also appreciate the role of the (Bangladesh) Army for showing restraint.

Commenting on the resignation of Sheikh Hasina Wajid, the European Union has urged the new government of Bangladesh to transfer power peacefully.
