Condemned Criminal Origins, known as Condemned in Europe and Australia, is a first-person psychological thriller video game featuring survival horror and action elements. Monolith Productions also introduced an online episodic flash game prequel. Influenced aesthetically by films like The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, the creators of Condemned aimed to develop a game that either introduced a new game mechanic or provided a fresh take on an existing one. They chose to leverage their expertise in first-person shooters to bring a unique focus to the game – melee combat, an aspect rarely explored in first-person games. The game primarily revolves around melee combat, with firearms being relatively scarce. Players can obtain melee weapons through various means: finding them in the environment, extracting them from their surroundings (like pulling a pipe from a wall or breaking off a 2×4), or taking them from enemies. Enemies can also utilize any weapon available to the player, including firearms. Each weapon comes with distinct attributes such as damage, speed, range, and blocking stats. For instance, an axe may offer higher damage and range but lower speed and blocking compared to a pipe.
There are two types of melee weapons: debris weapons and entry tools. Debris weapons serve solely for combat, while entry tools can be used in combat and have alternative functions. For example, an axe can chop down certain doors, a crowbar can open safes, a sledgehammer can destroy padlocks, and a shovel can cut through electrical wires.
Blocking is crucial in the game mechanics, as the player has limited health and can only withstand a few melee hits. A successful block momentarily disrupts the enemy’s balance, providing an opportunity for the player to counterattack. The game also features “finishing moves” when opponents are on their knees, such as a headbutt, neck break, punch, or head slam. Additionally, players can execute a quick kick, which is available regardless of whether they are unarmed, carrying a firearm, or wielding a melee weapon.
When using firearms, players cannot collect additional ammo, as firearms cannot be reloaded. The duration of each firearm is contingent upon the number of bullets present in the current magazine. Firearms can also be used as melee weapons, but unlike other melee options, firearms break with repeated use. The player possesses a taser for temporarily stunning enemies, allowing them to seize the enemy’s weapon. However, the taser requires recharging after each use and cannot serve as a regular substitute for the game’s melee weapons. Regardless of whether the player has a firearm or a melee weapon, only one weapon can be carried at a time.
The other primary gameplay element involves forensic crime scene investigation. The game employs a context-sensitive button that enables players to access a range of tools for discovering and documenting evidence. When the player enters an “Instinct Area,” the game signals the presence of evidence. Pressing the tool button automatically deploys the appropriate detection tool to pinpoint the evidence.
Once located, pressing the tool button again readies the necessary collection tool. The gathered evidence is then automatically sent to the lab for analysis. Detection tools encompass a UV light, a laser light, and a spectrometer, while collection tools consist of a sampler, a portable 3D scanner, and a digital camera. Examples of evidence encompass fingerprints, footprints, fibers, residues, particles, and blood splatter.
