Medal of Honor is a first-person shooter video game created by Danger Close Games and EA DICE and distributed by Electronic Arts. Serving as the thirteenth entry in the Medal of Honor series, the game is a fresh start for the franchise. Launched on October 12, 2010, the game is available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 platforms. Departing from its predecessors set in World War II, the Medal of Honor unfolds its narrative against the backdrop of the War in Afghanistan. The storyline draws inspiration from Operation Anaconda, specifically focusing on the Battle of Roberts Ridge events.

The inception of Medal of Honor’s development took place in 2007, following the launches of Medal of Honor: Vanguard, Medal of Honor: Airborne, and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2. EA DICE was enlisted to craft the multiplayer segment of the game. For the single-player campaign, Medal of Honor utilized a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3, while the multiplayer aspect employed the Frostbite Engine. Notably, it marked the initial instance in the Medal of Honor series to receive a “Mature” rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

Upon its release, Medal of Honor garnered favorable reviews from critics. The game was lauded for its captivating multiplayer experience, impressive audio quality, and compelling voice acting. The single-player campaign, praised for its explosive, gritty, and realistic nature, also received positive feedback. However, criticisms were leveled at the campaign’s brevity, minor technical glitches, and perceived similarities to other titles such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. Despite these critiques, the game proved to be a commercial triumph for Electronic Arts, achieving 5 million copies sold between October and November. Subsequently, a sequel titled Medal of Honor: Warfighter, developed by Danger Close Games, hit the shelves in October 2012.

Gameplay

Medal of Honor is a first-person shooter set in the context of modern warfare, primarily unfolding in Afghanistan. The gameplay centers on depicting military operations in this setting.

Single-player

In the single-player campaign, players engage in various in-game missions, such as infiltrating enemy hideouts and coordinating airstrikes on adversary positions. The modified Unreal Engine 3 facilitates dynamic gameplay elements like sliding into cover and executing diverse combat maneuvers. Within the single-player experience, players can request ammunition from teammates, albeit with limitations.

Multiplayer

In Medal of Honor’s multiplayer mode, a class-based system is implemented, offering three distinct classes – Rifleman, Special Ops, and Sniper. Players accumulate experience points during gameplay, enabling them to progress through levels and gain access to additional weapons and weapon accessories. For instance, the sniper class initially lacks a proper scope, which becomes available upon reaching level 3.

A noteworthy feature is the introduction of a score chain, where players earning a specific number of points before succumbing to defeat can choose between offensive support actions like mortar strikes or missile attacks and defensive support actions such as intel or ammo replenishment. Importantly, players are not restricted to a single support action per life and can continuously earn and utilize them.

The gameplay features two opposing factions: the Coalition, often referred to as “Python 1” in the in-game battle chatter, pitted against the Opposing Forces. Coalition troops are equipped with American gear like the M16A4, M4A1, M21, AT4, and M9 pistol, while the Opposing Forces, reminiscent of the Taliban, use weaponry such as the AK-47, AKS-74U, SVD, RPG-7, and “Tariq” pistol. Each weapon is intended to have a counterpart on both teams, though these counterparts may not necessarily share identical statistics.

Initially, weapons are specific to each team, but as players advance, they unlock weapons accessible to both sides, including the ability to wield enemy weaponry. Upon reaching level 8 in any class, a player achieves Tier 1 status, leading to a change in appearance. When a Tier 1 player is eliminated, the assailant receives an extra 5 points for taking down a Tier 1 opponent.

On November 2, 2010, DICE launched two multiplayer downloadable content (DLC) packs—an addition called “Hot Zone,” featuring a king-of-the-hill style mode, and another mode named “Clean Sweep,” which is a last-man-standing game type. The online servers for the game, along with those for Medal of Honor: Airborne and Medal of Honor Warfighter, were permanently closed on February 22, 2023.
