Grim Fandango, a 1998 adventure game, was directed by Tim Schafer and developed and published by LucasArts for Microsoft Windows. It marked LucasArts’ first foray into 3D computer graphics combined with pre-rendered static backgrounds in an adventure game. Like other LucasArts titles, players engage in conversations with characters and solve puzzles by examining, collecting, and utilizing various objects.

The game unfolds in the Land of the Dead, set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1950s, where recently departed souls, portrayed as calaca-like figures, journey before reaching their ultimate destination. The narrative centers around Manuel “Manny” Calavera, a travel agent, as he endeavors to rescue the virtuous soul Mercedes “Meche” Colomar during her afterlife journey. Grim Fandango seamlessly blends elements of the Aztec afterlife with film noir aesthetics, drawing inspiration from classic films like The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront, and Casablanca.

Grim Fandango garnered acclaim for its art design and direction, earning several awards and securing a spot among the greatest video games of all time. Despite critical success, it faced commercial failure, contributing to LucasArts’ decision to discontinue adventure game development and the subsequent decline of the genre.

In 2014, Double Fine Productions, under Tim Schafer’s guidance and with support from Sony, acquired the Grim Fandango license after Disney’s closure of LucasArts as a video game developer. Double Fine subsequently released a remastered version in January 2015, featuring enhanced character graphics, improved controls (including point-and-click functionality), an orchestrated score, and directors’ commentary. The remastered edition became available on Linux, OS X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Windows in January 2015, followed by releases on Android and iOS in May 2015, Nintendo Switch in November 2018, and Xbox One in October 2020.

Grim Fandango Gameplay

Grim Fandango is an adventure game that puts players in control of Manuel “Manny” Calavera (Calavera meaning ‘skull’ in Spanish) as he pursues Mercedes “Meche” Colomar in the Underworld. Powered by the GrimE engine, the game employs pre-rendered static backgrounds generated from 3D models, while key objects and characters are animated in 3D. Cutscenes in the game are also pre-rendered in 3D. Players can guide Manny’s movements and actions using a keyboard, joystick, or gamepad, and the remastered edition also introduces mouse control.

Manny’s objective is to gather items that can be utilized with other collectibles, elements of the environment, or fellow inhabitants of the Land of the Dead to solve puzzles and advance in the game. Notably, there is no Heads-Up Display (HUD). In contrast to earlier 2D LucasArts games, cues about interesting objects or individuals are not presented as floating text when the cursor passes over them. Instead, Manny turns his head toward these points of interest as he walks by. The player observes Manny’s inventory by watching him retrieve and stow each item in his jacket.

Dialogues with other characters unfold through conversation trees, enabling players to glean hints about puzzle solutions or plot progression. Similar to most LucasArts adventure games, players are never at risk of death or encountering no-win situations that would impede game completion.
