Tomb Raider, released in 2013, is an action-adventure game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix’s European branch. Serving as the tenth main entry and a reboot of the Tomb Raider series, it marks the initial installment in the Survivor trilogy, delving into the origins of the iconic character, Lara Croft. The game launched on March 5, 2013, for PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360.
The gameplay of Tomb Raider centers around survival, emphasizing exploration as players traverse the island and uncover optional tombs. This installment stands out as the first in the main series to feature multiplayer and is also the inaugural game in the franchise published by Square Enix following their acquisition of Eidos Interactive in 2009.
Following the 2008 release of Tomb Raider: Underworld, Crystal Dynamics initiated the development of a new Tomb Raider game. Instead of opting for a sequel, the development team chose to reboot the series, revisiting the origins of Lara Croft for the second time, akin to their approach with Tomb Raider: Legend.
Set on the island of Yamatai, this installment portrays Lara as an untested and not-yet battle-hardened explorer. In this narrative, she must rescue her friends and escape the clutches of a malevolent cult that pursues her. The role of Lara Croft, previously voiced by Keeley Hawes, was assumed by Camilla Luddington, who also performed the character’s motions.
Upon its launch, Tomb Raider garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning praise for its exceptional graphics, engaging gameplay, Camilla Luddington’s noteworthy performance as Lara, and the compelling characterization and development of the protagonist. However, the introduction of a multiplayer mode was met with less favorable reviews. The game achieved remarkable commercial success, surpassing 14.5 million units in sales by October 2021, solidifying its status as the highest-selling title in the Tomb Raider series to date.
In January 2014, a remastered version titled Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This edition featured enhanced graphics and included additional downloadable content. Following its success, a sequel titled Rise of the Tomb Raider hit the shelves in November 2015, followed by a third installment, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released in September 2018.
Gameplay
Tomb Raider adopts a third-person perspective, placing players in control of the iconic protagonist, Lara Croft. The game employs an interconnected hub-and-spoke model that seamlessly blends action-adventure, exploration, and survival elements. Players have the freedom to navigate between camps and traverse the island through footpaths, improvised or pre-existing zip lines, and climbable tracks.
Leveraging many of Lara’s established moves from prior Crystal Dynamics games, the developers have introduced subtle tweaks, including the incorporation of stealth gameplay elements. Throughout the game, quick-time events are strategically placed, often emerging at pivotal or fast-paced junctures in the storyline, such as extracting a shard of metal or escaping a collapsing cave.
The game’s combat draws inspiration from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series, featuring mechanics that allow players to freely aim Lara’s bow and salvaged firearms, engage in close-quarters combat, and execute stealth kills. A notable feature is the Survival Instinct, providing players with the ability to highlight enemies, collectibles, and objects crucial for environmental puzzles.
Integrating role-playing elements, players earn experience points as they advance in the game, achieved through specific actions and completing in-game challenges related to hunting, exploration, and combat. These experience points enable the upgrading of skills and abilities in distinct ways, such as increasing storage capacity for arrows and ammunition. Weapon customization and upgrades are possible using salvaged materials found across the island.
Character progression plays a significant role, with players gaining access to superior items, weapons, and equipment as they navigate through the game. The appearance of these items is often tied closely to events in the storyline. Beyond the main narrative, players can undertake various side quests, explore the island, revisit locations, and embark on the challenge of discovering hidden tombs.
