Dishonored, released in 2012, is an action-adventure game crafted by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is set in the fictional and plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall. It revolves around the narrative of Corvo Attano, the Empress of the Isles’ bodyguard. Corvo finds himself framed for her murder, compelling him to adopt the role of an assassin to seek vengeance against those who plotted against him. Throughout his journey, Corvo receives support from the Loyalists, a resistance group dedicated to reclaiming Dunwall, and the Outsider, a powerful entity bestowing magical abilities upon him. Noteworthy actors, such as Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, John Slattery, Lena Headey, and Chloë Grace Moretz, lent their voices to the characters in the game.
The game adopts a first-person perspective, offering players a range of approaches to tackle missions with a strong emphasis on player choice. Missions can be completed through stealth, combat, or a combination of both, and the game encourages exploration of each level to discover new paths and alternative methods for achieving mission objectives. Notably, players have the option to complete all missions, including the elimination of Corvo’s targets, in a non-lethal manner. The storyline and mission dynamics are responsive to the player’s actions, be they violent or non-violent.
Throughout its two-and-a-half-year production period, Dishonored underwent various versions. Initially envisioned to be set in medieval Japan and seventeenth-century London, the final setting became the city of Dunwall, inspired by the late nineteenth-century architecture of London and Edinburgh. During development, playtesters uncovered unexpected ways to exploit the available powers and abilities. Instead of constraining these techniques, the designers chose to adapt and redesign levels to accommodate these creative approaches.
The game’s musical score, composed by Daniel Licht, reflects the atmosphere of nineteenth-century London. Dishonored received acclaim for its mission narratives and the freedom granted to players in completing them. It garnered several awards, including the 2012 Spike Video Game Award for Best Action-Adventure Game and the 2013 BAFTA Award for Best Game. Continuously recognized as one of the top action-adventure games of 2012, it has been hailed as one of the greatest video games ever made.
Initially released in October 2012 for PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360, Dishonored later received additional content focusing on the assassin Daud and his quest for redemption. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were released in August 2015. In 2016 and 2017, two follow-up stories, Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, were launched. The 2021 game, Deathloop, is set in the distant future of the Dishonored universe.
DISHONORED (2012) Gameplay
Dishonored is an action-adventure game that unfolds through a first-person perspective, emphasizing stealth action, gadget use, and environmental manipulation to eliminate adversaries. The game world comprises mission-focused areas, providing multiple paths for exploration in terms of in-game movement and powers. Between missions, players converge at a central hub named the Hound Pits pub. Here, the protagonist, Corvo, can interact with allies, receive mission briefings, set alternate objectives, and convert collected loot into new equipment and upgrades.
The diverse in-game areas encompass loading docks, royal estates, impoverished streets, and a bathhouse. Players can save their progress anywhere, and a checkpoint save system is incorporated, albeit disabled during combat. Dishonored offers four difficulty levels, altering the effectiveness of health and mana potions, as well as enemies’ awareness, damage output, and responsiveness. The easy setting even allows for health regeneration.
Integrating role-playing game elements, Dishonored permits players to upgrade their powers and make moral choices, emphasizing non-linear consequences. Notably, the game can be completed without killing any non-player characters (NPCs), including boss characters and mission targets. For instance, a non-lethal situation involves completing a side mission for a character, leading to that character kidnapping and enslaving two of Corvo’s targets.
Each mission offers various ways to explore and reach targets, with level design supporting the player character’s abilities rather than prescribing specific paths. Certain mission elements, like changes in a target’s clothing and mask colors, are randomized, requiring exploration each time the mission is played. The player’s actions are tracked by a “chaos” system, measuring friendly fire, violence, and deaths caused. This system modifies the game world, influencing the story without directly punishing the player. NPC reactions to violence may lead to betrayal or refusal of support. The chaos system dynamically alters the game environment, affecting dialogue, increasing the presence of rats and plagued citizens, and introducing new scenes. These changes can impact the active mission and future missions, ultimately influencing which of the two-game endings is reached. Opting for violence may expedite mission completion but consumes more in-game resources, such as health and mana potions, which are more frequently required in direct combat.
