Released in 2012, Far Cry 3 is a first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, serving as the third main installment in the Far Cry series following Far Cry 2. The game unfolds on the fictional Rook Islands, an open tropical archipelago that players can freely explore. Emphasizing combat and exploration, the gameplay allows players to employ a variety of weapons against human foes and hostile wildlife, incorporating role-playing elements like skill trees and experience points.

The team dedicated significant effort to designing the island, considering it the “second most important character” in the game. Inspirations were drawn from films and TV shows like Apocalypse Now and Lost, as well as video games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption. Michael Mando was cast as Vaas Montenegro, an antagonist likened to Darth Vader by the development team.
Ubisoft officially announced the game in June 2011 and promoted it through companion apps, web series, and crossovers. Far Cry 3 was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in November 2012. Despite initial weak pre-order sales, the game garnered critical acclaim for its characters, particularly Vaas, world design, visuals, progression, and gameplay.
However, the multiplayer modes faced criticism. Commercially successful, the game sold 10 million copies and received multiple year-end accolades, including nominations for Game of the Year and Best Shooter. Regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made, Ubisoft supported Far Cry 3 with downloadable content and released the standalone expansion, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, in 2013. A successor, Far Cry 4, hit the shelves in November 2014, and the game was re-released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2018.
Far Cry 3 Gameplay
Far Cry 3 is a first-person shooter set in the fictional Rook Islands, a tropical archipelago located somewhere in the Pacific and ruled by pirates and mercenaries. Players take on the role of Jason Brody and have the flexibility to approach missions and objectives in various ways. Options include eliminating enemies using an array of firearms such as assault rifles, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers, as well as explosives like land mines and grenades.
Alternatively, players can adopt a stealth approach to avoid enemy detection. For example, they can scout enemy outposts using a camera to mark enemy locations or distract foes by tossing rocks. Employing stealth, which involves silenced weapons and combat knives, helps prevent enemies from triggering alarms for reinforcements.
Skills are acquired through experience gained from completing missions and defeating enemies. These skills are unlocked in three thematic skill trees: the Spider, the Heron, and the Shark. Each tree enhances different aspects of Jason’s abilities, with the Spider focusing on stealth takedowns and hunting skills, the Shark on assault takedowns and health, and the Heron on long-range takedowns and mobility. As skills are acquired, a tribal tattoo on Jason’s forearm grows accordingly.
Rook Islands provide an open-world environment for free exploration. Jason can traverse the islands using various vehicles such as dune buggies, all-terrain vehicles, cargo trucks, jet skis, boats, and even hang gliding. In the course of the game, players discover a wingsuit that Jason can use for gliding. Friendly settlements offer opportunities for shopping, completing side missions like hunting quests and assassinations and interacting with the environment.
The Rook Islands are home to diverse wildlife, including leopards and sharks. The game’s artificial intelligence allows wildlife to interact with each other, simulating a realistic ecosystem. Hunting animals provides materials for crafting items such as weapon holsters and ammo pouches. Collecting green plants enables the creation of syringes for healing during combat or gaining other gameplay advantages.
Players can climb radio towers to remove scramblers, reveal parts of the map, highlight points of interest, unlock new weapons, and grant access to supply-run side missions. Liberating enemy outposts from pirates establishes rebel bases, unlocking additional side missions and providing fast-travel locations for trading with vendors. A later patch allows players to reset outposts.
Unscripted events may occur during exploration, such as wildlife attacks or encounters with pirate patrols. Players can participate in Trials of the Rakyat, timed combat challenges, engage in minigames like poker and knife throwing, and collect various items such as relics, letters, and memory cards.
The game includes a four-player cooperative multiplayer mode set six months before the main game’s events. It features five classes: Warrior, Rusher, Deadeye, Saboteur, and Bodyguard, each customizable with different loadouts and weapons. Activating the “battle cry” in multiplayer boosts the team’s health, accuracy, and running speed. Competitive multiplayer modes include Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Transmission, a variant of Domination with radio transmitter control points.
Firestorm requires teams to ignite fuel dumps while protecting their own. Successive kills, reviving team members, and using battle cry grant Team Support Points to unlock perks like “psyche gas,” causing enemies to hallucinate. The game also includes a map editor for creating and sharing custom content, allowing players to customize landscapes and place buildings, trees, vehicles, and AI-controlled units.
