Telltale Games developed and published The Walking Dead, an episodic adventure video game that serves as the inaugural installment in The Walking Dead video game series. Launched between April and November 2012, the game consists of five episodes and is compatible with various platforms, including Android, iOS, Kindle Fire HDX, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and some other famous platforms such as PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Set in the same fictional universe as the comic book series of the same name, the game unfolds shortly after the onset of a zombie apocalypse in the state of Georgia. The narrative revolves around Lee Everett, a university professor and convicted criminal, who becomes a protective figure for a young girl named Clementine. Together, they embark on a quest to find Clementine’s parents. While most characters are unique to the game, some from the original comic series make appearances.
The game’s story aligns with the tone of the comic series, overseen by its creator, Robert Kirkman. Telltale Games handled the majority of the developmental work and story specifics. The Walking Dead distinguishes itself from other graphic adventure games by placing a greater emphasis on story and character development rather than puzzle-solving. The narrative is shaped by the player’s dialogue choices and actions during quick-time events, influencing outcomes such as character deaths or changes in disposition.
Critical acclaim greeted The Walking Dead, praising its emotional depth and the strong connection between Lee and Clementine. It received Game of the Year awards and is regarded as one of the greatest video games. The player’s choices carry over between episodes, tracked by Telltale to influence subsequent writing. By the end of 2012, over 8.5 million units had been sold, contributing to a revival of the adventure game genre. Telltale expanded the first season with the 2013 downloadable episode “400 Days,” bridging the gap to the second season. The Walking Dead Gameplay
The Walking Dead is a graphic adventure that unfolds in a third-person perspective, employing various cinematic camera angles. As the central character, Lee Everett, players collaborate with a disparate group of survivors to navigate the challenges of a zombie apocalypse. The game encourages players to examine and interact with characters and objects, utilizing inventory items and the environment. Interactions with the surroundings offer choices, such as observing a character, engaging in conversation, or, if in possession of an item, offering it to the character or inquiring about it.

In dialogue sequences, players must make selections within a limited timeframe, and Lee may remain silent if the player fails to respond promptly, influencing how other characters perceive him. Unlike RPGs such as Mass Effect or Fallout, where choices align with a “good or evil” scale, decisions in The Walking Dead yield ambiguous results, impacting the attitudes of non-player characters towards Lee.
Players can choose to activate a “choice notification” feature, which signals changes in a character’s disposition towards Lee resulting from these decisions. Action-oriented sequences require players to follow on-screen prompts for quick time events (QTEs) to ensure the survival of themselves or other characters. If a player fails, the game restarts just before the QTE. Timed situations extend to critical decisions, such as determining which of two characters to save.
Each episode comprises five significant decision points, where players must choose between two options. The game tracks player choices through Telltale’s servers, allowing players to compare their decisions with the broader player base. While the story’s main events progress irrespective of the choices made, the actions and attitudes of non-player characters in subsequent scenes are influenced by these decisions. The game accommodates multiple saves and includes a “rewind” feature, enabling players to revisit and modify earlier decisions, and facilitating the exploration of alternative narrative paths.
