Manhunt 2, released in 2007, is a stealth game developed by Rockstar Games. The game was created by different Rockstar studios for various platforms, including Rockstar London for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 2, Rockstar Leeds for the PlayStation Portable, and Rockstar Toronto for the Wii. Serving as a sequel to the 2003 title Manhunt, it hit North American shelves on October 29, 2007, and was released in the UK on October 31, 2008. The storyline revolves around Daniel Lamb, a mental patient with amnesia, and Leo Kasper, a sociopathic assassin guiding Daniel in his quest for identity.

Originally set for a North American and European launch in July 2007, Manhunt 2 faced setbacks when it was denied classification in the UK and Ireland. Additionally, it received an Adults Only (AO) rating in the United States, prompting Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, to suspend its release. Given that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony Computer Entertainment prohibit the release of AO-rated titles on their consoles, this decision would have significantly limited the game’s potential audience in the US. In response, Rockstar censored the game by blurring the screen during executions and removing the scoring system that rewarded players for particularly brutal killings. This edited version received an M rating in the US from the ESRB and was eventually released on October 29. However, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) continued to deny classification for the edited version in the UK. Rockstar appealed, and after a vote by the Video Appeals Committee, the game was granted an 18 certificate for release.

Manhunt 2 generated mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its improved gameplay, game engine, plot twists, darker storyline, and use of extreme violence. However, the voice acting and outdated graphics received a more varied response. The game attracted controversy both before and after its release, drawing attention from figures such as Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, anti-video game activist Jack Thompson, and various US senators. It was even nominated for GameSpy’s 2007 Game of the Year Award for the PS2.

MANHUNT 2 (2007) Gameplay

Players primarily take on the role of Daniel Lamb from a third-person perspective, with Leo Kasper being playable in specific missions. Despite their distinct appearances and personalities, both characters share similar controls. Similar to the original game, the core gameplay revolves around stealth execution, where the player must approach an enemy from behind, undetected, to eliminate them. Executions are categorized into three levels, each escalating in violence and graphic intensity: Level 1 (Hasty), Level 2 (Violent), and Level 3 (Gruesome). The player has control over the chosen level, indicated by the changing color of the lock-on reticule: white (level 1), yellow (level 2), and red (level 3). On PC or Wii, executing moves involves a quick time event, requiring specific mouse or Wii Controller actions or button presses at precise moments. Failure to complete the sequence within the specified time results in the interruption or skipping of the execution, with the victim still meeting their demise.

Manhunt 2 introduces enhancements to the stealth elements compared to its predecessor. Players now have more options for executing enemies, including the use of firearms. Two notable additions are “environmental executions,” allowing players to utilize elements in the game world (such as manhole covers, telephones, fuse boxes, toilets, etc.) to eliminate foes, and “jump Performing executions allows for airborne attacks by leaping off ledges. The scoring system, evaluating the brutality of executions, was omitted from the console versions to secure an M rating from the ESRB, while the PC version retained this feature.

During non-combat situations, players must evade enemies by avoiding their line of sight or hiding in shadows. The shadow system has been refined from the first game, with enemy AI being more vigilant. When hiding in shadows, the player may need to mimic button combinations or motions (similar to a quick time event) to regulate the character’s breathing and remain undetected. In the PC and Wii versions, players must keep the cursor within an on-screen circle. The game introduces climbing and crawling to enhance the sense of exploration. Players can now smash lights to create additional pockets of shadow. Audio plays a crucial role, as tasks like running, opening doors, or accidentally knocking objects over can alert enemies. Sound sources like machinery can be used strategically to mask the player’s noise. The game also incorporates forms of combat beyond stealth, including gunfights with firearms. Players can take cover, target specific body parts during combat, and find painkillers to enhance their health. In instances where the player is discovered, they can choose to run, hide, or engage in hand-to-hand combat.
